Digital template vs. laser engraving – what you should know

Our natural stone slabs are produced using precise CO₂ laser engraving . There is an important difference between the digital template and the final engraving result, which we would like to explain here.

The digital template

Each design begins as a high-resolution digital file with:

✅ Fine shades of gray and smooth transitions
✅ Detailed shading
✅ Photorealistic details
✅ Unlimited grayscale levels (256 gradations)

How does a CO₂ laser work?
The CO₂ laser operates in binary mode – it only has two states: On (material is removed) or Off (no processing). The laser cannot directly reproduce true grayscale levels as they exist in the digital original.

How are shades of gray created nonetheless?
A clever process called dithering (rasterization) is used to simulate shades of gray:

Dark areas = many closely spaced points
Light areas = fewer, more widely spaced points
Midtones = average dot density

The human eye perceives these points from a distance as shades of gray – similar to a printed photograph in a newspaper.

The result: Almost photorealistic

Although the laser technically only knows "on" or "off", the engraving result is almost photorealistic :

✅ High level of detail – most details are preserved
✅ Impressive depth – thanks to precise rasterization
✅ Natural effect – from a normal viewing distance
✅ Permanent – the engraving never fades

Minor limitations:

⚠️ Very fine shades of gray can be easily simplified.
⚠️ Extremely fine details (e.g., thin lines) may vary slightly.
⚠️ Smooth gradients are approximated by rasterization.

These differences are minimal, however, and hardly noticeable under normal viewing conditions. The overall image remains impressively detailed and true to life.
